New York Sans Temps Morts
Photographs by Nate Dorr
139th St Branch, May 17 – July 15, 2008
Opening reception May 17, 8:30pm

Since 2006, Nate Dorr has photographed rock shows at unlikely venues, buildings and infrastructure at every stage of use and disuse, art on the street, art in museums, and otherworldly places at the farthest reaches of New York City. The 139th St Branch will show over a hundred of his several thousand photographs of New York, with walls devoted to Rocknroll, Urbex, Graffiti, City, Art Museums, and Flickr.

A note on Sans Temps Morts: In late 1950s, avant-garde French artists, activists, and theorists forming the group Situationist International urged their countrymen to Vivez sans temps morts, jouissez sans entraves. The slogan was picked up by protesters during the 1968 Paris student riots that sparked a year of violent political unrest and ultimately led to significant reforms in French education and labor systems. Nate Dorr, who endeavors always to live sans temps morts, appropriated the phrase for the title of his weekly rock show listing starting in 2007.
