Brooklyn-based toy pianist, percussionist, and composer Annabelle Cazes, aka Glockabelle, makes her New York City debut Friday, June 27 at the 139th St Branch. Just back from a two-week tour across America with the Fiery Furnaces, Glockabelle is switching into classical mode for a program featuring works by Satie, Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart on the glockenspiel and toy piano.

As a classical pianist who studied at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, Glockabelle always pondered how she might translate her piano technique into something different. The result? A year ago, a friend lent her a 12-inch-casio synthesizer that doubles as a pocket-calculator. Glockabelle began to test out her classical repertoire on the tiny keys, but soon felt inspired to write a piece exclusively for the keyboard. (Listen.)

At the time, she was also performing on a lyre-shaped glockenspiel with French rock band Flop et Tout le Tremblement. How could she transform the glockenspiel into something more than an ornamental xylophone? By trading in mallets for thimbles. "The glockenspiel has a new heyday in indie-rock... But I haven't seen one played the way the Fiery Furnaces did," writes Jon Pareles in the New York Times ArtsBeat.
